Objectives:
The project conducts an assessment of the Mimbres Basin Aquifer and
the area around Columbus, New Mexico and Puerto Palomas, Mexico.
Generally, there has been no mechanism to assess withdrawal from the acquifer,
measure water quality, and disseminate water quality data to the two communities
for planning purposes. Specific objectives include:
(1) work with the community; assess knowledge of groundwater issues
and concerns;
(2) compile existin data on groundwater;
(3) establish a groundwater database;
(4) evaluate information needs;
(5) develop a sociodemographic and economic database;
(6) assess the impact of socioeconomic changes on groundwater resources;
and
(7) develop a water quality assessment plan.
