SCERP Project Number: P-1

Principal Investigator: Jeffrey S. Lee, Ph.D.

 Co-Principal Investigator: Royce Moser, M.D.

Rocky Mountain Center for Occupational and Environmental Health,

 University of Utah

1. Objectives of the project:
  1. To provide a short term training course in occupational and environmental health targeted at IMSS, STPS and SEDUE personnel.
  2. To establish further collaboration with a collaborating University in Mexico

2. Project Accomplishments:

The above objectives were achieved.

We held a training course in Cuernavaca, Mexico July 14-16, 1993 (see attached program). The course represented a collaborative effort between the National Institute of Public Health and the University of Utah. Speakers and participants came from IMSS and SEDESOL as well as official health inspectors from the Ministry of Public Health, Mexico. Dr. Peter Gerity, Principal Investigator for SCERP represented SCERP at the course and Dr. Royce Moser represented the University of Utah, Rocky Mountain Center for Occupational and Environmental Health. Dr. Moser presented a keynote address. Proceedings of course were prepared and translated and copies were distributed to interested parties. A copy is attached to this final report.

Collaboration was established with Dr. Maurcio Hernandez, Director of the Center for Public Health Research, National Institute of Public Health in Cuernavaca. Potential research projects were developed and submitted for funding consideration through SCERP for year 03.

3. Difficulties Encountered:

Several different attempts were made to organize and present a course in Mexico. It was difficult to finalize a collaborative agreement with an appropriate Mexican Institution or sponsor. Attempts made to collaborate with the IMSS in Juarez and Baja proved unproductive.
